Why I chose the Coleman Swagger Tent?
When looking for my perfect tent, I was looking for something small that I could set up quickly and easily on my own and that would fit in my little car. The 3 Person Coleman Instant Swagger Darkroom Tent turned out to be the perfect choice. It sets up easily with instant up poles that simply pull out and click into place, meaning I can set it up on my own in just minutes of arriving at the camp site. Additionally I wanted something with a little bit of space but not too big to set up and pack in my car.
How Easy Is It to Set Up?
One of the biggest selling points of the Coleman Swagger tent is its quick setup. It features an instant-up frame, meaning the poles are pre-attached, significantly reducing assembly time. I have been able to set up this tent in under 5 mins, even when it’s windy, making it perfect for beginners or those who dislike complicated setups.
How Effective Is the Darkroom Technology?
The Darkroom technology is one of the tent’s standout features, blocking up to 90% of sunlight. This keeps the interior cooler during the day and allows for a longer, more comfortable sleep in the morning. This feature is especially useful in hot climates or during summer camping trips. However, while it does a great job at reducing light, it’s not completely blackout. Some ambient light can still filter through the seams, however it does keep the tent dark enough to enjoy a bit of sleep in before the full sun of the day.
Is It Spacious Enough for Three People?
With a floor size of approximately 2.4m x 2.1m, the Coleman Swagger tent offers enough space for two adults comfortably, or three people if you’re using compact sleeping arrangements. If you plan to store gear inside, it might feel a bit snug for three campers. Many users find it ideal for solo campers who want extra space or for couples with light gear. I’ve used it both on my own and shared with a friend and there was plenty of room for an inflatable double bed and our bags.
How Well Does It Handle Rain and Wind?
The Swagger 3-Person tent is built with Coleman’s WeatherTec system, which includes a water-resistant fly, inverted seams, and a bathtub-style floor to prevent water from seeping in. While it can withstand light to moderate rain, it may struggle in heavy downpours or strong winds due to its low-profile design and single-layer construction. I’ve used this tent in both overnight rain and high winds and the tent stayed both dry on the inside and upright. For extra protection, many campers recommend applying a waterproofing spray and using a tarp underneath.
How Is the Ventilation?
Ventilation is crucial in a small tent, and the Coleman Swagger tent includes both side mesh windows and a rear vent, so offers plenty of airflow. This helps also reduce condensation, especially in warmer weather.
Is It Durable?
Built with polyester fabric and fiberglass poles, the tent is durable for casual camping. However, it’s not a heavy-duty tent for extreme conditions. Regular campers recommend handling the zippers carefully and avoiding excessive stress on the poles to maximize longevity.
