Elephant Rocks Denmark WA

Elephant Rocks Denmark WA

Elephant Rocks Denmark WA is an enchanting and unique geological formation, characterised by massive granite boulders that resemble a herd of elephants. This is one of Denmark, Western Australia’s must-visit destinations for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. The large granite rocks, shaped by centuries of natural forces, create a surreal landscape that transports visitors to another world. Best of all Elephant Rocks is easily accessible to all via a short walk from the carpark to the lookout, from the carpark to the beach or from nearby Greens Pool. Elephant Rocks is definitely Western Australia bucket list worthy!

Where is Elephant Rocks?

Elephant Rocks is located 18km south west of Denmark. The Western Australian town of Denmark is found in the South West region and is situated just over 420km south east of Perth.

Is there a lookout?

Yes there is a lookout that you can access from the Elephant Rocks / Greens Pool carpark where you can enjoy an incredible view overlooking Elephant Rocks. The view from here literally took my breath away. While all the Denmark beaches are beautiful, this beach is distinctively different. I could not wait to get down there and swim underneath these gigantic rocks.

When is the best time to visit?

It’s best to visit on a sunny, fine day to fully appreciate the white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. The height of Summer is the best time to visit as the waters of the South West are a lot colder than other parts of Western Australia. Hotter temperatures make swimming, snorkeling and paddling more enjoyable.

Get there early! Finding parking can be difficult at peak times (Summer school holidays!). Get there as early as you can, grab a parking spot and enjoy the beach and rocks before the crowds arrive.

How far is Elephant Rocks from Greens Pool?

Elephant Rocks is just a short stroll from Greens Pool. There’s good access between the two so you can visit one then the other or move back and forth between the two.

Is there 2WD access to Elephant Rocks?

Elephant Rocks is accessible by 2WD via a sealed road to the Greens Pool / Elephant Rocks carpark.

How do I find my way down to Elephant Rocks?

Simply follow the signage from the capark. There are two walkways down to Elephant Rocks, however I recommend taking the pathway from Greens Pool that takes you to the top of Elephant Rocks. From  the top of Elephant Rocks, there is not only a beautiful view, but a picturesque walk down the set of stairs and then through a tight opening in the rocks to the beach entry.

Is there good snorkeling at Elephant Rocks?

The snorkeling is pretty good at Elephant Rocks. It’s mainly rocks and seaweed under the water. The depth varies from shallow to up to around 10 metres at the base of the rocks. There weren’t a lot of fish on my visit, but you’ll definitely see a few as you swim around the rocks. The area is well protected so there are usually pretty good conditions for snorkeling and swimming.  Being in the water and swimming around the base of the rocks and looking up is quite the experience. It’s definitely worth getting in the water to experience these magnificent rocks from this angle, so be sure to bring the snorkeling gear along.

Being in the far south west of Western Australia the water is cold most of the year round, so a wet suit is recommended. I visited in Summer during a lucky patch of warmer weather and found the water to be an ok temperature to enjoy 30 mins of snorkeling (without at wet suit) before it started to get a little cold.

Can you jump off the rocks?

Some of the rocks are far too high and risky to jump off, however there are some lower rocks in deep water you can jump off. Always check the depth of water before jumping as tides can greatly effect depth.

Is there room to set up on the beach?

Yes there’s plenty of white sand at the base of the rocks to set up on the beach. Finding a spot may be challenging at peak times, however this is a lovely beach to set up your beach shade, beach chairs, towels and cooler with lunch, snacks and drinks. What facilities are at Elephant Rocks?

There are a couple of toilet blocks at the Elephant Rocks / Greens Pool carpark. There was also a food truck and ice-cream van in the carpark when I visited during the Summer school holidays.

Can you camp at Elephant Rocks?

No camping is permitted at Elephant Rocks.
