Kuljak Island Ascot Stand Up Paddleboard

I walked it, then I rode around it, then I decided to stand up paddle board (SUP) around it too. Whatever way you like to adventure, Kuljak Island Ascot in Perth, Western Australia is a beautiful place to do it. Kuljak Island is accessible via a bridge from the Ascot Waters Estate which is approximately a 15minute drive from Perth city.

There’s not a lot of sandy spots around the island to launch your SUP, but this little grassy spot is near Kuljak Island’s main lower carpark so it was a good spot to inflate our stand up paddle boards and enter the water.

We started out exploring the west side of the island however it’s quite a paddle to get around the dense wetlands and it was a little windy on this side on the day so we turned around after paddling through and exploring some of the wetland area. We saw a few black swans around this area.

As you can see as we paddled back to the east side of the island the conditions where perfect, the water was glassy and calm. That’s one of the best features about this spot is that the east side of the island is pretty much protected no matter what the wind conditions.

This is a narrow section with the Ascot Water mainland on one side and Kuljak Island on the other. There are a couple of bridges to paddle under which is a nice element of this paddle too.

If you want to paddle all the way around the island it would most likely take between  1.5 – 2 hours, however this is very dependant on wind conditions.  What I love about this paddle is while there is lots of nature to see there are also marina’s filled with boats and large houses to admire along the way too. We saw lots of birdlife including black swans, pelicans and ducks and the east side in particular was tranquil and relaxing place to paddle.
